Whether it’s winter storms or summer heat waves, power outages always take us off guard. Even if the electricity only goes out for a few minutes, this can be a scary time for kids. It’s always a good idea to keep your emergency plans updated, and we are here to help!

We’ve come up with a list of five ways you can help your kids feel safe when the lights go out. Consider adding these steps to your family emergency preparedness plan, and make power outages a little less stressful for everyone involved.

1. Have A Plan

It’s important to make sure you have a clear plan for any emergency situation, power outages included. Do you have electric locks on your doors? Medication that needs to stay refrigerated? Whether your plan includes a backup generator or only a few flashlights, make sure everyone in your household knows what to do. Ensure everyone knows where to meet in case you cannot contact each other, and that all members of your family have access to backup lights. If you have young children who might not remember where to go, have a map for them with the location of the meeting point and lights highlighted. And remember, a landline phone will work even if the electricity goes out!

2. Practice Makes Perfect

If your area has frequent power outages, it can be helpful to practice what you will do if the power goes out, especially for smaller children. Treat it like fire drill or an earthquake drill kids would have at school; just turn the lights out and make sure everybody knows where to find the backup lights, where to meet, and how to follow any other special instructions.

3. Go Backyard Camping

If the weather allows it, of course! Set up camp in your yard (or the back of your car!), complete with tents, sleeping bags, and outdoor games. If you have a grill or fire pit, make s’mores! If not, you can create a comforting flickering effect with the PackLite Firefly USB. The warm-tone LED lights have a flickering setting and a shimmering exterior, perfect to create a more natural light. Gather around and sing campfire songs, tell scary stories (not too scary though!) and enjoy being in the outdoors.

4. Make Shadow Puppets

Pass this art form on to the next generation! Shine a colorful PackLite Spectra USB against a plain wall and use your hands to create animals in the shadows. See if you can create a story (maybe to go along with the campfire stories from earlier?), or just have fun making silly creatures! If you’re feeling extra crafty, cut forms out of construction paper to make more complicated scenes and backgrounds.

5. Keep Solar Lanterns Charged and Ready

LuminAID’s solar inflatable lanterns are a great addition to any emergency preparedness kit. Once charged, they can be kept for up to two years without recharging, though we recommend you pull them out to charge every three months when you check your emergency supplies. Unlike flashlights, you don’t need to store extra batteries! Our lights all pack flat for convenient storage.
