One of LuminAID’s frequent Give Light partners is ShelterBox, an organization that provides “the tools that enable people to rebuild homes and transform their lives” in the wake of disasters. Since the organization’s first distribution of LuminAID lights, following a 2013 typhoon in the Philippines, our relationship with ShelterBox has continued to grow. ShelterBox now includes LuminAID solar lights in the boxes they distribute to those around the world affected by flooding, earthquakes, volcanoes, and other disasters.
The organization recently released their 2017 report, Recovery Starts with Shelter, which reveals the scale of the huge unmet need for emergency shelter.

ShelterBox showed that after being forced to flee their homes after disaster, only 1 in 5 families received shelter and non-food items in 2017. That’s a shortfall 26.5 million people.

In the last five years, shelter provision has been consistently underfunded, with all appeals in the study raising less than half of their target funding. But $1.1 billion is all that is needed to fund the shelter needs for families left homeless by conflict and natural disaster.
