Responding to the Haiti Earthquake

Responding to the Haiti Earthquake

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti this morning. This magnitude suggests that it may be stronger than the devastating 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. We are monitoring, and will be ready to assist our nonprofit partners with solar lanterns and chargers as they evaluate and respond.

Responding to the 2021 Haiti Earthquake

August 14, 2021: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti this morning. This magnitude suggests that it may be even more damaging than the devastating 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. We are monitoring, and will be ready to assist our nonprofit partners with solar lanterns and chargers as they evaluate and respond.

As you may know, LuminAID was invented in response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, as a safe and sustainable source of light for the nearly 5 million people who were displaced following that disaster. Our hearts go out for the people of Haiti and the incredible community groups and humanitarians we have the honor of working with. We hope that our technology will be able to help in the recovery to today's earthquake.

If you know of a nonprofit or community group that may be responding in Haiti, we offer discounted rates and in-kind donations for disaster relief and recovery. Interested organizations can apply here: nonprofit.luminaid.com

Statement from Andrea Sreshta, LuminAID Co-Founder

As you might know, LuminAID was invented shortly after the 2010 Haiti Earthquake. My co-founder Anna and I were inspired to create a lightweight, waterproof solar lantern that could pack flat and be shipped in bulk for humanitarian aid. Last week, a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. For reference, the 2010 earthquake measured 7.0. That earthquake killed over 250,000 people, and left 1.5 million people homeless.

Our nonprofit partners have begun to respond in Haiti, and it's clear that there will be a long-term need for relief aid, including light and power. Our warehouse has been hard at work this week shipping thousands of solar lanterns and phone chargers to NGO's responding in Haiti, including lights sponsored by customers through our Give Light, Get Light Program. In many ways, this is exactly the situation LuminAID lights were designed for. We are devastated by the scale of this tragedy in Haiti, and working hard to put our technology to use to help survivors access safe light and power as the recovery unfolds.

You can help us respond by sponsoring light for disaster relief, or sharing this page with your network: LuminAID.com/Haiti. Just $10 will provide a safe, renewable source of light for families in the dark after disasters like the earthquake in Haiti.  We'll continue to share updates on this page as we hear back from nonprofits who are responding in Haiti, and you can follow along on our social media channels as well.

Thank you,
Andrea Sreshta
