The summer solstice, in many cultures and societies, is a time of deep significance. Regardless of culture, it’s a hopeful time for change and new beginnings. Here are five ways to celebrate the longest day of the year and the rest of the year ahead.
1. Wake up early
There is perhaps no greater sense of a new beginning than watching the sun rise on the longest day of the year. Set your alarm a little earlier than usual to rise and reflect and set personal goals for the future.
2. Enjoy local flora
At the height of summer, take the time to appreciate the greenery of your community at its most vibrant. In many Northern European countries, it is a traditional activity to celebrate by making garlands of flowers and flower crowns. This could make for a great family activity!
3. Attend a festival
The Summer Solstice is an event marked in the calendars of many different cultures -- be sure to check out your area to see if any town or city is hosting some sort of festival. From traditional druidic celebrations of Northern Europe, to more modern yoga get-togethers (the Summer Solstice happens to fall on International Yoga Day this year), there is something for everyone. For our Chicagoland area readers, check out this gathering to do blindfolded yoga on the beach!
4. Have a bonfire
Making sure to be aware of local laws, what could be a more exciting send-off to the longest day of the year than gathering around with friends and family? Whether you have activities planned, or just want to relax, enjoy the serenity of the evening as you reminisce on the day and the year so far.
5. Celebrate light!
If your community doesn’t permit bonfires, don’t worry -- you don’t necessarily need a bonfire to celebrate and be thankful for light. LuminAID solar lanterns are a wonderfully conscious way to celebrate your community as well as express solidarity with communities all around the world in need of light. Charge our solar lanterns with light from the longest day of the year to stay lit well into the evening! See available lanterns here.
