Read the latest from our Notes From the Field series, in which we hear stories of distribution from our humanitarian partners.

During the 2018 holiday season, LuminAID partnered with buildOn, an organization whose goal is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education. Through our Give Light, Get Light partnership, and thanks to your support, we were able to send 1,000 LuminAID solar lights to buildOn for their Adult Literacy programs around the world. Through the buildOn Adult Literacy Program, taught in the evenings, parents and grandparents are given the education they need to build a better life for themselves and their children in the very same schools their children attend during the day.

buildOn volunteers visit villages in Burkina Faso, Haiti, Nepal, Nicaragua, Malawi, Mali, and Senegal to build schools and promote literacy, especially among women. buildOn has built more than 1,400 schools to date!

Now we’re back with an update from buildOn about how the lights have impacted the work they’re doing in Malawi.

Katherine Swan Stoner, a volunteer with buildOn, brought LuminAID's PackLite Nova USB lights on a recent trek to Malawi. On this trek, she visited the village of Mphowe, and saw firsthand the impact that portable solar light can have.

The lights were wonderful to share with our host family who has no electricity. Our host mother was able to see while cooking and we were able to see each other during dinner. It's winter in Malawi, so completely dark by 6:45pm, and the lanterns are life changing for our family. The children will be able to study after completing their chores and after it's dark.” - Katherine Swan Stoner, buildOn volunteer

LuminAID is proud to support buildOn in the critical work they are doing to improve education and spread literacy around the world.
